Getting a Vasectomy

A vasectomy is a simple, safe, and permanent birth control option for men who are confident in their decision not to have more children—or any at all. It’s a quick outpatient procedure with minimal recovery time, no impact on sexual performance, and none of the ongoing maintenance or side effects associated with other contraceptive methods.

Choosing a vasectomy means taking control of your reproductive future with a reliable, one-time solution. It’s a responsible decision that offers peace of mind and allows you and your partner to enjoy life without the worry of unplanned pregnancy.

What’s the process of getting a vasectomy

The vasectomy procedure itself is an easy outpatient procedure that only takes about 20 minutes.  On the day of your procedure you should expect to spend 60 - 90 minutes at our facility.

  • Check-in, collect insurance (if applicable), payment for procedure, and watch an overview video
  • Get assigned to a personal room for the procedure
  • The doctor will meet with you and apply a local anesthetic that will take 10 minutes to take affect
  • Once the local is working the doctor will start the non-scalpel, minimally invasive procedure
  • The procedure uses a specialized surgical tool to access the interior of scrotum
  • The doctor will then perform the procedure of separating the vas deferens, cauterizing, and clipping each side to help prevent them from potentially growing back together
  • No stitches will be necessary and the application of bandaids are all that is necessary for the non-scalpel procedure
  • You should be ready to leave within 20 minutes or so after the procedure is complete ,as long as you’re feeling fine you can drive yourself home.
  • You’ll also receive a kit to test your semen (about 6 weeks after the procedure) to confirm the procedure is working as expected
  • Plan on resting for a couple days after the procedure and only doing light activities. You can typically resume normal activities after a week or two - once you feel fully recovered.
  • Follow up - there is a one week follow up meeting scheduled  to ensure appropriate healing.

Check Upcoming Availability

Many insurance plans cover vasectomies, but it’s best to check with your provider to confirm coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.  If you are not using any insurance for your procedure a vasectomy is typically around $850. Give us a call and we can give you our current pricing for the procedure.

We also offer optional nitrous oxide or “Laughing Gas” for our procedures.  This service is not billed to insurance. The patient would be billed and pay separately for this service. The cost is $75.00

Most men experience little to no pain during the procedure because a local anesthetic is used. Some mild discomfort or swelling may occur afterward, but it typically resolves in a few days.  If you have a history of anxiety around needles, dentistry, other medical procedures you may opt for using nitrous oxide to provide a distraction and potential relief to that anxiety.

A vasectomy usually takes about 20–30 minutes and is done as an outpatient procedure over about 60 - 90 minutes.

Most men can return to light activities within a day or two. Full recovery and resuming strenuous activities usually take about a week.

While vasectomy reversals are possible, they are more complex, expensive, and not always successful. A vasectomy should be considered a permanent decision.

No, a vasectomy doesn’t affect testosterone levels, sex drive, erections, or the ability to ejaculate. In fact, some men feel more relaxed knowing they no longer need to worry about contraception.

A vasectomy isn’t immediately effective. It may take several weeks or months to clear sperm from the system, so alternative contraception is needed until follow-up tests confirm zero sperm in the semen.

The risks are minimal, but possible side effects include mild swelling, bruising, or discomfort. Extremely rare complications include infection or chronic pain, which can usually be managed effectively.

No, a vasectomy doesn’t impact hormone levels, masculinity, or physical traits like body hair or muscle mass.

After a successful vasectomy and confirmed absence of sperm, you cannot naturally father children. Consider sperm banking if you want to preserve the option.
